Air FryerAir Fryer Asparagus
Asparagus goes one of two ways: crisp-tender with browned tips, or limp and stringy. The difference is trimming off the woody ends and not overcooking — and the air fryer nails both, browning the tips in minutes while the spears stay bright and snappy. Thickness matters more than time here, so match the two.
- for the asparagus
- 1 lb asparagus, woody ends trimmed
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp salt
- 2 tbsp grated parmesan (optional)
makes about 4 side portions — a squeeze of lemon or a shower of parmesan takes it over the top.
- Snap or cut off the woody bottom inch or two of each asparagus spear — it bends and breaks right where the tough part ends.
- Toss the spears with olive oil, garlic powder, salt, and pepper until evenly coated.
- Preheat the air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for 3 minutes.
- Lay the spears in a single layer (a little overlap is fine). Air fry 7–9 minutes for medium spears, shaking once, until the tips are browned and a spear bends without snapping.
- Finish with grated parmesan or a squeeze of lemon and serve.
Very thick spears? Add 2–3 minutes and, if you like, halve them lengthwise so the centers cook through.
Very thin spears? Check at 5 minutes — pencil-thin asparagus can go from perfect to limp fast.
Want it fancier? Wrap small bundles in prosciutto before air frying, or finish with a drizzle of balsamic glaze.
No parmesan? Lemon zest and a little flaky salt brighten it just as well.
Kantan tip — sort the spears by thickness and cook similar sizes together — a basket of mixed thin and thick spears leaves you with some burnt tips and some raw centers no matter the timing.
